MARS ATTACK ( 1996)

Was it your idea in Mars Attacks! to act with a lit pipe in your mouth throughout?
Yes indeed. It’s something which comes out of repertory theatre: when in doubt, have a prop. It’s completely silly but that’s the world of Tim Burton for you. He’s a unique player on the stage... there’s no one like that man. It was a joy to do it. I remember the first day of filming so well, when we were in the White House, in the Oval Office. Mr. Jack Nicholson – the big man – was there and the first shot was on him. So he looks at us all. We’re all sitting there. There are eight actors, eight fairly well-established actors, sitting there, staring at him. Suddenly, Jack said, “God damn, it’s getting hot in here.” He was so open and honest. Everyone gets nerves. It’s the joy of it. You see somebody challenged. But he was so gracious and so cool and so… Jack.
I was speechless that morning, working with him. I was having a cup of coffee by the bagels, desperately trying to remember my damn lines. Suddenly I look up and it’s Jack. “Hey Pierce,” he says. I keep stirring my coffee. Jack Nicholson is talking to me and I’m dumbstruck. Inside my head, I’m yelling at myself: “Jesus, just shake the man’s hand.” I couldn’t move. I was immobilised by the Jack-ness of it all.

Fue su idea en Mars Attacks!  actuar con un tubo iluminado en la boca ?

PB-Sí, por supuesto. Es algo que sale del teatro de repertorio: ante la duda, tener iniciativa. Es completamente absurdo, pero ese es el mundo de Tim Burton . Es un jugador único en el escenario ... no hay nadie como ese hombre. Fue un placer hacerlo. Recuerdo el primer día de rodaje ¡ tan bien !, cuando estábamos en la Casa Blanca, en la Oficina Oval. Mr. Jack Nicholson - el hombre grande - estaba allí, y el primer disparo era de él. Así que mira a todos nosotros. Estamos todos sentados allí. Hay ocho actores, ocho actores bastante bien establecidos, sentados allí, mirando fijamente. De pronto, Jack dijo: "Dios maldiga, qué calor hace aquí." Él era tan abierto y honesto. Todo el mundoestaba nervioso. Era la alegría en el rodaje. Usted ve a alguien desafiante,  pero era tan amable y tan ocurrente y tan ... Jack.

Me quedé sin palabras por la mañana, ¡trabajar con él.! Yo estaba tomando una taza de café junto a las caravanas, tratando desesperadamente de recordar mis  malditas líneas. De repente miro hacia arriba y es Jack. "Hey Pierce", dice. Sigues revolviendo el café. Jack Nicholson me está hablando y estoy estupefacto. Dentro de mi cabeza, me grito: "¡Jesús, sólo agitar mi  mano! " No me podía mover. Estaba paralizado por la llamada de Jack-
