Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
We recently interviewed Jonathan Pryce for the Empire Podcast and he mentioned that the script for Tomorrow Never Dies was a changeable one…
It was absolutely harem scarem, that script. There were fires being lit every which way, you didn’t know where to turn. It really was a mad caper. It started for me on the very first day with the temperature way above 100ºF and into the stratosphere, but we had to start. I was being strangled in the cockpit of a plane, I think… I still don’t know what the movie’s about. I honestly couldn’t tell you.
I remember Jonathan being his acerbic self and that was very entertaining. That did me no favours when I was standing there trying to give my best Bond impersonation. It was just hopelessly insane at times. Thank God for Michelle Yeoh. She has remained a great friend. A very impressive lady.

PB-Fue absolutamente una locura, ese guión. Hubo incendios  en todas direcciones, que no se sabía a quién recurrir. Realmente fue una travesura loca. Todo comenzó para mí desde el primer día con  temperaturas superiores a 100 º F y en la estratosfera, pero tuvimos que empezar. Yo estaba siendo estrangulado en la cabina de un avión, creo ...  todavía no sé, de qué trataba  la película . Sinceramente, no podría decirte.

Recuerdo  a Jonathan siendo un ser mordaz y  muy entretenido. Eso no  me hizo ningún favor,  cuando yo estaba esperando, concentrado,  tratando de dar lo mejor de Bond. Fue irremediablemente loco a veces. Gracias a Dios por Michelle Yeoh. Ella ha seguido siendo una gran amiga. Una señora muy impresionante.

How do you go about sharing the screen with Robin Williams?
It’s like trying to play the kazoo with Duke Ellington. I wish I could say that was my line but it’s not – it’s Robin bloody Williams’. I read it this morning in the New York Times in his tribute to [much-loved comedian and Mork & Mindy co-star] Jonathan Winters. I just let Robin Williams have his time. All you can do is just try and react to him and try and stay in the moment. You say your line as sincerely as possible and hope for the best that he’ll stick to the script. It’s a classic film and one I’m very proud of.
Was there a problem with corpsing?
Yeah. There was a lot of that – that’s part of the joy of working with the man. The shrimp scene at the end of the movie has become quite a classic, so I’m told. Then there was standing on top of a diving board at 7am with 400 extras staring at you, you’re 35ft up in the air and you’re meant to do a beautiful swan dive. You go out and lift your arms up and they shout “Cut!” and you have to crawl your way back along the board. It’s not a groovy feeling.

¿Cómo hace usted para compartir la pantalla con Robin Williams?

PB-Es como tratar de tocar la chicharra con Duke Ellington. Me gustaría poder decir que fue mi línea, pero no lo es - es maldito Robin Williams. Lo leí esta mañana en el New York Times en su homenaje a este muy querido actor,  y Mork y Mindy ,co-estrellas,  Jonathan Winters. Acabo de ver que Robin Williams tiene su tiempo. Lo único que puedes hacer es tratar de reaccionar frente a él y tratar de mantenerte en el momento. Mantenerte en  su línea tan sinceramente como sea posible y esperar lo mejor, que él va a seguir a la secuencia requerida. Es un clásico del cine y  estoy muy orgulloso de haber podido trabajar con él.

Hubo un problema  con "corpsing"?

PB-Si. No había mucho de eso - que es parte de la alegría de trabajar con el gran profesional que es   La escena de los camarones  al final de la película,  se ha convertido en todo un clásico, por lo que me dicen. Luego estaba de pie en la cima de un trampolín a las 7 am con 400 extras mirando a ti, que eres 35 pies en el aire y que está destinado a hacer un hermoso salto del ángel. Sales y levanta los brazos hacia arriba y gritar "¡Corten!" Y usted tiene que rastrear el camino de vuelta a lo largo de la junta. No es un sentimiento maravilloso.
